Alan Walter Gear DFC

Born in 1916, Alan Gear was posted to No.32 Sqn flying Hurricanes in early October 1940 during the Battle of Britain. After a year with the squadron he became an instructor, returning to action with No.72 Sqn in October 1942 and going to North Africa. During his time there he claimed an Me109 and Ju87 plus a further two aircraft damaged. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in July 1943 before becoming a test pilot that October. In January 1944 the engine on his aircraft failed and he suffered severe injuries in the resulting crash. Having never returned to flying he was invalided out of the RAF in January 1945. Known for his enormous handlebar moustache post-war, he died on 22nd May 2003.
