Pleasure boats heading up river to Westminster after going out as far as Greenwich and the Thames flood barrier, a police launch makes its way eastwards to Tower Bridge. This was built in 1894 to allow ships further access up river. HMS Belfast is an 11,000 ton Navy cruiser which served throughout the Second World War and opened as a museum in 1971. In the distance can be seen Canada Tower, part of the Canary Wharf development. On the south bank, London Bridge City comprises of the Hays Galleria complex, a 100 foot high glass roof covers the former Hays Wharf where the great tea clippers once moored.

Tower Bridge and Tower of London by Graeme Lothian. (GS)

Opened in 1894 and measuring 800 feet between the two towers, which house the machinery for raising the bascules (each weighing about 100 tons) in 90 seconds. The upper walkway is open to the public. To the left is the Tower of London started by William the Conqueror in 1078. It has been a fortress, royal residence, an arsenal and, more famously, a prison.

On 23rd November 1917, flying in company with Frank Linke-Crawford, Oblt Brumowski shared in the destruction of two Italian Nieuport scouts near the mouth of the Piave River, as depicted here, flying Albatros D.III (Oeffag)153.45 of Flik 41J bearing his personalized skull motif and all-red colour scheme applied over the original mottled factory finish. Arriving too late to take any meaningful part in the war, Dornier's extraordinary Do.335 Pfeil (Arrow) might have made a significant contribution to the war in the air, had it gone into mass production. Drawing on the company's considerable experience with pull-push engine arrangements, the Do.335 represented a radical change in fighter design, resulting in an aircraft with a top speed of 763 Km/h at 6500m. Here the seventh of ten Do.335A-Os gets airborne from Oberpfaffenhofen en route for evaluation by the Erprobungskommando 335 in September 1944.

Spitfire of 610 Squadron which has been damaged during combat during the height of the Battle of Britain is shown over the white cliffs of Dover. No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force's first major combat with the Luftwaffe was on 27th May when a Heinkel bomber protected by about 40 Me110s, was engaged. The combat which followed saw the Heinkel and three Me110 fighters being shot down. Throughout August 610 Squadron was involved in bitter fighting over the Channel and Home Counties of England. During the Battle of Britain No.610 Squadron operated from Biggin Hill, Hawkinge, and, on one occasion, from Croydon. The Squadron put up a terrific show and 40 enemy aircraft were confirmed as having been destroyed by 610 Squadron during August. The loss to the Squadron was eleven pilots killed during the battle.

Mystery still surrounds just why Manfred von Richthofen risked so much in chasing the novice pilot Wilfred Wop May into Allied-occupied territory on the morning of Sunday, 21st April 1918, but it was to be his last flight, this error of judgement costing him his life. Von Richthofen had broken from the main fight involving Sopwith Camels of 209 Sqn to chase Mays aircraft, but found himself under attack from the Camel of Captain Roy Brown. All three aircraft turned and weaved low along the Somme River, the all red Triplane coming under intense fire from the ground as well as from Browns aircraft. No one knows exactly who fired the crucial bullet, but Manfred von Richthofens aircraft was seen to dive suddenly and impact with the ground. The Red Baron was dead and his amazing run of 80 victories was over. The painting shows Mays aircraft (D3326) in the extreme distance, pursued by DR.1 (425/17) and Browns Camel (B7270) in the foreground.

The Battle of Jutland took place on 31st May 1916. It was the largest clash of battleships in history, over 250 ships from the Grand Fleet and the German High Sea Fleet took part. But both fleets struggled to gain supremacy in difficult conditions. The battle started well for HMS Invincible, together with Inflexible and Indomitable she formed part of the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron under Admiral Hood. She scored eight direct hits on Lutzow which caused the German ship to withdraw from the battle and eventually sink. HMS Invincibles luck finally ran out when she was hit on the midships Q turret, the eventual explosion causing the ship to sink in two halves. Here Invincible is seen prior to the battle from HMS Nestor, one of the destroyer escorts of the 13th Flotilla.

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on a calm, almost windless day, on 21st October 1805. Nelsons revolutionary battle plan was to cut apart the larger Franco-Spanish fleet of Vice-Admiral Villeneuve by sailing in two single column divisions directly at right angles into the combined fleet and thus rendering almost half of the leading ships useless until the could turn and join the fight, which in such calm conditions could take hours. The battle raged for five hours in which time not one British ship was lost, however, Nelson would tragically lose his life at the very moment of his triumph, a triumph which rendered the British Navy unchallenged in supremacy for over a century. Here HMS Mars passes between the French ship Belleisle on her starboard and the French ship Fougeux on her port, firing a murderous hail of gunfire at both ships. Also shown in the painting on the left hand side is the Spanish ship Monarco and the French ship Pluton.

The entry of the United States into the war opened up vast new hunting grounds for the German u-boat fleet. Operation Paukenschlag (Drumbeat in English) began in January 1942, bringing the U-boats their easiest pickings of the war. Over 300 allied vessels were sunk during the Paukenschlag along the US coastline, ranging from New York harbor, to the Straits of Florida. This period, also known as the second Happy Times to the men of the U-boats, was only brought to an end in mid 1942 by the formation of allied convoy systems. On the evening of April 5th 1942, U552, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Erich Topp, sealed the fate of the British tanker MV British Splendour east of Cape Hatteras. The U-boat was part of the fourth wave of boats of Operation Paukenschlag, she returned to Saint Nazaire on April 27th 1942 having sunk seven ships during the patrol.
