Mark Churms

Mark was born in Wales in 1967. He gained his degree in Architectural Studies at Oxford Polytechnic in 1989, but soon his interest in drawing buildings was surpassed by his love of painting horses and in 1991 he began work as a freelance artist. His first commissions were for sporting subjects, Polo, Racing and Hunting. However his consuming passion for military history, particularly of the Napoleonic era, quickly became his dominant theme, with the invaluable counsel of French military experts (accuracy in uniform and terrain of the various battles takes a great deal of time and consultation with many experts across Europe). Mark Churms joined Cranston Fine Arts in 1991 and for a period of 8 years, was commissioned for several series and special commissions. His series of the Zulu War, and of the Battle of Waterloo were the highlights during this period. Mark Churms' deep understanding and detailed knowledge of the period made Mark at that time one of the most prolific and successfull artists for Cranston Fine Arts. Cranston Fine Arts are proud with their series of superb art prints and original paintings painted by Mark Churms in this period. We now offer Mark Churms art prints in special 2 and 4 print packs with great discounts as well as a number of selected original paintings at upto half price.

This picture depicts the closing moments of the life of Socrates. Condemned to death or exile by the Athenian government for his teaching methods which aroused scepticism and impiety in his students, Socrates heroicly rejected exile and accepted death from hemlock. Here the philosopher continues to speak even while reaching for the cup, demonstrating his indifference to death and his unyielding commitment to his ideals. Jacques Louis David painted this historical picture in 1787. Commissioned by the Trudaine de Montigny brothers, leaders in the call for a free market system and more public discussion.

In 1973 the 1st Battalion of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment was on its third emergency tour of duty in Northern Ireland. West Belfast was covered in the squalid signs of violence. The boarded-up and bombed-out shells of houses, the burned-out cars, the hate-inspired graffiti and the rusting barbed wire. Evidence of the battalion would be seen in prowling armoured personnel carriers with swinging gun turrets, alert foot patrols moving from cover to cover, road blocks and barriers, and, within 200 yards of the city centre, Battalion Headquarters in Hastings Street, with its sandbagged and camouflaged sentry posts, and tall wire-netted anti-rocket screens. Private Ken Cross and Sergeant Judd, of A Company, were in an Observation Post (OP) in the upstairs bedroom of a derelict terraced house near Leeson Street. Privates Jackson and Noad were also in the house. Suddenly, a blast bomb went off in the back yard, followed by high velocity fire from at least three different directions. The ensuing gun battle lasted about fifteen minutes, and more than fifty rounds were returned at the gunmen, wounding one of them. Ken Cross and Peter Noad explained the details to me. They were unshaven, it being their second day in the OP. In the upper room, Ken was at the aperture of the blocked-up window with his L 42 Sniper rifle. A grey blanket (covering broken glass) and four large packs were on the floor, along with a camera fitted with a telephoto lens. Two of their sleeping bags were laid out ready for use. Sgt Judd, holding his SLR (he was left-handed) was operating his Pocketphone Radio.

Sedan, Northern France, 16th May 1940. At the start of the invasion of France, seven Panzer divisions in three Corps were sent through the Ardennes forest, to cross the Meuse. Leading the southernmost column was General Heinz Guderian's XIX Panzercorps, comprising the 1st, 2nd and 10th Panzer divisons. Within three days they had reached and crossed the Meuse at Sedan, expanded their bridgehead and after a brief pause 'Der Schnelle Heinz' or 'Fast Heinz' panzers raced north west to the Channel coast.
