Jacqueline Stanhope

Jacqueline Stanhope was born in 1963 and was educated in Scotland. Facinated by horses and racing she began painting and drawing them at an early age by the young age of 10 she was using oils. She was gifted both academically as well as artistically, she began selling her work in secondary school. She left school at the age of 16 to follow her career in painting on a professional level, chosing this route over a career in medicine. She was facinated by anatomy and science more than art and started freelancing as a graphic and portrait artist. By age 21 she had undertaken work for Walt Disney and had painted football teams. Jacqueline took time out to raise a young family and then re-entered the art world by producing 'Northern Dancer & Sons' a limited edition print. This print led to a rise in her popularity with leaders in the racing world investing in her work. Her work is exhibited annually at Tattersalls December Sales which has also raised her profile with paintings being sold to clients worldwide.

This Week's Half Price Art

On a dark winter evening, the Permanent Vehicle Check Point (PVCP) north of Rosslea, close to the border with Monaghan, was manned by 8 soldiers commanded by Corporal Robert Duncan.  In response to a threat to the border locations an additional 4-man team commanded by Corporal Ian Harvey was on external patrol.  From the direction of the border a specially armour-plated lorry, with about twelve terrorists intent on destroying the base stopped, and as Private Houston checked the back of it, automatic gunfire opened up from Armalite and AK47 rifles.  Grenades were thrown into the base, and a flame-thrower was aimed at the command sangar.  Two RPG7 Rockets were fired at the observation sangar.  Heavy suppressive fire continued as the lorry reversed and smashed its way into the compound.  Two soldiers were killed.  The truck drove out of the devastated PVCP, and a red transit van drove in, laden with explosives.  Fortunately only the booster charge exploded.  As the patrol came up rapidly, firing at the terrorists, the truck drove off at speed, its two machine-guns mounted on the rear firing, its driver intent on escape.  It was found abandoned at the border with a 210 kg bomb on board.  The scale and type of this attack had never been seen before in Northern Ireland.  Every soldier involved acted with exemplary courage and the determination to defeat the enemy.  The conduct of Corporals Duncan and Harvey was in the highest traditions of conspicuous gallantry.  Each received the Distinguished Conduct Medal.  The events of the Derryard Action are a landmark in the modern fighting history of the King's Own Scottish Borderers.  I was phoned soon after the action.  I flew to Belfast and was driven to the location.  In order to paint the action it was important to see the PVCP in its scarred condition, before it was repaired.  The lonely, isolated building put me in mind of the beleaguered little forts which dotted this part of Ireland in the time of Queen Elizabeth I.  The soldiers took up the positions they had fought in, while I sketched them in their Tam-o'-shanters.  Corporal Ian Harvey is in the foreground with Pte Maxwell.  At about 2.00pm the Union Brigade crashes through the ranks on Napoleons Ist Infantry Corps. The 2nd Royal North British Dragoons (later known as The Scots Greys) on the far left of the line, plow through Marcognets division, only Duruttes division will escape intact. With Brigade General Ponsortby at their head, elements of the now disordered Cavalry charge on to the French artillery.  Even though, at close quarters, the Gunners and attached Infantry are no match for the wild Scots, they desperately try to save their 12 pounder field pieces. However the British heavy Cavalry is now out of control and Napoleons retribution will be swift.  From the undulating ground before Paillotte comes the thunder of hooves and the deadly lances of 4th Regiment and the 3th Chasseurs a Cheval. In the confusion many of the British soldiers are completely unaware of the onslaught as the fresh French Cavalry sweeps through their flank.  Ponsonbys mount leaps through the mud as the exhausted Brigade is herded together for the final kill.  Even against all odds the brave men continue to fight. The Brigade General himself will shortly be sabred by Sergeant Urban as he attempts to capture the eagle of the 4th Lancers.

The 50th Anniversary of the SAS 1947-1997. Depicting 21 SAS. The Artists Rifles was raised in London in 1859 as a Volunteer regiment, and comprised professional painters, musicians, actors, architects and others involved in creative endeavours.  The unit's badge, designed by William Wyon, shows the heads of the Roman gods Mars and Minerva in profile.  It served in the Boer War and the 1st World War, when it suffered higher casualties than those of any other battalion, including 2,003 killed, 3,250 wounded, 533 missing and 286 prisoners of war.  Members of the regiment won eight Victoria Crosses, fifty-six Distinguished Service Orders and over a thousand other awards for gallantry.  During World War II it was an officer training unit, but was disbanded in 1945.  The Special Air Service (SAS) was formed in 1941 by David Stirling as a commando force operating behind enemy lines during the war in North Africa and Europe.  It was officially disbanded on 30th November 1946.  In 1947 the Artists Rifles was re-raised as the 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles).  21 SAS was active during the Malayan Emergency and in many subsequent conflicts.  In 1952, members of the Artists Rifles who had been involved in special operations in Malaya formed 22 SAS.  For much of the Cold War the role of 21 SAS was to provide stay-behind parties in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion of western Europe.  This painting was commissioned to mark the first 50 years of the 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles).  The scene depicts a meeting, bridging time between SAS soldiers of 1947 and 1997 as they share a brew of tea. The theme is the constant truth that, though times change, the man, in most respects, stays the same.  21st SAS enjoys a long historical affiliation with the Royal Academy, and this painting was unveiled at a cocktail reception there on Friday 6th December 1996, to mark the unit's Golden Jubilee.
