Richard Simkin

Born on November 5th 1850 and was born in Herne Bay Kent, England, Richard Simkin grew up in Aldershot, Hampshire, marrying his wife, Harriet, in 1880, and it is also believed he was a volunteer in the Artist's Rifles. He was employed by the War Office to design recruiting posters. He is probabaly best know for his series of Army regiments including Yeomanry and Colonial regiments, a weekly supplement print to the Army and Navy Gazette. In 1901 he created a series of 'Types of the Indian Army' for the Gazette. He obtained much of the information from the Colonial and India Exhibition of 1886. Over a period of over 50 years Richard Simkin produced thousands of watercolours of Army uniforms and watercolours of Army life and campaigns. Many of these paintings can be seen in regimental museums and messes. Simkin also contributed illustrations to The Army and Navy gazzette, the Boy's Own Magazine, and The Graphic and many paintings were used in books and publications of Raphael Tuck and Sons. Richard Simkin died on the 25th June 1926 at home at 7 Cavensigh Street, Herne Bay. Many of richard Simkin's antique prints have been reproduced as prints by Cranston Fine Arts and are available from our websites, along with many original antique prints which are hard to find these days.

The 50th Anniversary of the SAS 1947-1997. Depicting 21 SAS.  The Artists Rifles was raised in London in 1859 as a Volunteer regiment, and comprised professional painters, musicians, actors, architects and others involved in creative endeavours.  The unit's badge, designed by William Wyon, shows the heads of the Roman gods Mars and Minerva in profile.  It served in the Boer War and the 1st World War, when it suffered higher casualties than those of any other battalion, including 2,003 killed, 3,250 wounded, 533 missing and 286 prisoners of war.  Members of the regiment won eight Victoria Crosses, fifty-six Distinguished Service Orders and over a thousand other awards for gallantry.  During World War II it was an officer training unit, but was disbanded in 1945.  The Special Air Service (SAS) was formed in 1941 by David Stirling as a commando force operating behind enemy lines during the war in North Africa and Europe.  It was officially disbanded on 30th November 1946.  In 1947 the Artists Rifles was re-raised as the 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles).  21 SAS was active during the Malayan Emergency and in many subsequent conflicts.  In 1952, members of the Artists Rifles who had been involved in special operations in Malaya formed 22 SAS.  For much of the Cold War the role of 21 SAS was to provide stay-behind parties in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion of western Europe.  This painting was commissioned to mark the first 50 years of the 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles).  The scene depicts a meeting, bridging time between SAS soldiers of 1947 and 1997 as they share a brew of tea. The theme is the constant truth that, though times change, the man, in most respects, stays the same.  21st SAS enjoys a long historical affiliation with the Royal Academy, and this painting was unveiled at a cocktail reception there on Friday 6th December 1996, to mark the unit's Golden Jubilee.

Sturmtigers of Sturmmorser Company 1002, commanded by Lieutenant Zippel, take on ammunition in preparation for the battle to come. These fearsome monsters 38cm rocket projectors could penetrate up to 2.5m of reinforced concrete. Luckily for the Allies only 18 were completed by the wars end.

 Although outnumbered ten to one, General Arthur Wellesley defeated the well trained Mahratta army in one of the fiercest battles in India. It was the first of many victories by the future Duke of Wellington, and the bloodiest for the number, he recalled, that I ever saw.

16 July 1760: This regiment of light cavalry, mounted on light, active horses, was raised in 1759 in the London area. It went to join the British Army in Germany in 1760, and a few weeks later in its first action it won high distinction and suffered very heavy loss.  With Hanoverian and Hessian troops, the newly arrived British light cavalry attacked a French force of five battalions and a regiment of hussars near the village of Emsdorf, in Hesse. In hot weather, and struggling to manhandle their artillery, the French infantry withdrew through woods towards Langenstein, where they rallied. Emerging from the trees into an open plain they were immediately charged by the 15th Light Dragoons. Three times the regiment charged the enemy, who outnumbered them five to one. A complete battalion was captured, along with six guns and numerous colours.  The light dragoons wore distinctive caps, light jockey boots and were armed with carbine, bayonet, pistol and sword. The drummers wore heavily laced green coats with hanging sleeves, and their drums bore the arms of the their Colonel. The enemy consisted of five battalions of two German regiments in the French army, the Infantry-Regiment Royal Baviere and the Infantry-Regiment Anhalt. German troops wore blue coats, with different facing colours, (in this case, black and straw colour respectively).
