Zulu Company of the First Fusiliers Battle Group in the attack on Bridge 4, Basra, on the evening of 22nd March 2003. I travelled to this spot in Sgt Jason Wellard's Warrior, and sketched the soldiers as they took up position here. Jason, the 12 platoon sergeant, carrying a 350 radio on his back, controls the fire support group. He is kneeling with his SA80 rifle in hand, giving target indications to the soldier beside him who is firing illumination rounds from the 51mm mortar. Beyond them the platoon commander, Lt Chris Rees-Gay (with radio pack) and three section commanders are planning the attack. Firing its chain gun and flying the red and white pennant is 'Zero Bravo', the command Warrior of the Z Company commander, Major McSporran. The four Warriors of 10 Platoon are crossing the bridge; the commanders of the two leading Warriors fire Schermuly flares to illuminate the ground in front of them.

Knowing that the battle of Bannockburn was lost, the Earl of Pembroke and Sir Giles d'Argentan led King Edward the 2nd from the field in much haste. King Edward and his bodyguard had to fight their way through the Scots, who barred their escape. King Edward had one horse killed under him, and only the heroic resistance of the earl of Pembroke's bodyguard prevented the Scots from capturing the English King.

After the charge up the valley and taking huge losses, The Light Brigade crashed through the Russian guns at the end of the valley. They were counter- charged by Russian cavalry. Shown here are the 11th and 8th Hussars engaging the Russian Uhlans and Dragoons. The losses to the Light Brigade were very high - 113 killed, and 134 wounded. General Pierre Bosquet after witnessing the charge remarked - It is magnificent but it is not war. The battle of Balaclava, finally ended leaving Balalcava still in British Hands.

Oberscharfuhrer Ernst Barkmann in Panther 401 accidentally found himself as the spearhead of the 2nd SS Panzer Divisions night assault on the crossroads at Manhay. Initially mistaking a lone Sherman of US 7th Armoured Division as that of his own commander, he pulled alongside the enemy tank, and only realised his mistake when he noticed its unusual red interior lights. In a brief close quarter fight he managed to destroy the M4 with the Panthers anti-personnel mortar (Panzergranate) He then proceeded along the moonlit forest roads past a succession of surprised American units to Manhay and on towards Liege, having left several destroyed vehicles in his wake. His appearance caused havoc in the US defences, culminating in a rout.
