Robert Hillingford

Born London 1825. Died there in 1904. Hillingford was a very prolific artist of Historic genre pictures particularly scenes of battle. He was a Costume Realist and like many similar artists of the day such as Crofts, Woodville and Leutze, he studied in Dusseldorf returning to England in 1864, and exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy two years later. Towards the end of his life he began to paint military scenes particularly events from the Napoleonic Wars, i.e. there are numerous paintings by him depicting incidents before, during and after the battle of Waterloo. Other themes popular with the artist were the battles of the Duke of Marlborough, Dettingen, and military events of the seventeenth century, but Hillingford did produce some contemporary paintings such as Sebastapol; the attack on the Redan exhibited in 1899 and his Royal Academy picture of 1901, South Africa 1901: the dawn of Peace in which Lord Kitchener on horseback holds up a peace proclamation surrounded by Boer Civilians. Hillingford paid close attention to accuracy in details of dress and had a collection of original uniforms. He was Vice President of the Kernoozers Club, the members of which were all collectors of objects d'art and militaria, but he achieved limited fame during his lifetime.

Under pressure from Stalin to open a second front in Europe, Operation Jubilee was designed ostensibly as a reconnaissance in force on the French coast, to show the feasibility of taking and holding a major defended port for a day, in this case Dieppe. The plan devised by Lord Louis Mountbatten failed due to inadequate naval and air support, carrying out the landing in daylight and general lack of intelligence of the target. Here new Churchill tanks of the 14th Canadian Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment), with men of the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and Fusiliers Mont-Royals, struggle to fight their way off the beach. Only a handful of men penetrated into the town itself, and eventually the remaining troops were ordered to withdraw. Out of 5086 soldiers who landed only 1443 returned.

Musa Qala, Afghanistan, 25th May 2008. While returning to Sangin following an operation in support of 2 PARA battlegroup, the Vikings of 3rd Troop, Armoured Support Company, Royal Marines were the target of an enemy ambush. As the convoy began to cross the Helmand river the waiting Taliban engaged the convoy with RPGs, heavy machine gun and sniper fire. Amazingly despite this hail of fire no one was hit until tragically Marine Dale Gostick was killed and two others injured when his vehicle was blown up by a massive IED.
