The relief of Bastogne turned the tide in the Battle of the Bulge and Hitlers final great offensive of World War II lay in ruins. P47 Thunderbolts of the 406th Fighter Group, in company with P38 Lightnings, support the advancing armor of General George Pattons US Third Army as they prepare to relieve the battered 101st Airborne Division from their heroic defence of Bastogne during the final climax to the Battle of the Bulge, 24 December 1944. The Battle of the Bulge was one of the largest land battles of WWII with more than a million American, British and German troops involved, incurring huge casualties on all sides and this release pays tribute to the sacrifice of Allied Forces, during this important milestone in World War II.

Last stand of the 44th (Essex Regiment) after their retreat from Kabul. This painting depicts an incident during the retreat from Kabul in the first Afghan War of 1839-1842, when the remnants of the 44th (East Essex) Regiment made a last stand at Gundamuck and were overwhelmed by Afghan tribesmen. In an attempt to save the Regimental Colour, Lieutenant T A Souter wrapped the flag around him. Seeing the ornately decorated cloth the Afghans believed him to be a high official and spared his life for ransom.

Probably the best known painting of the gallant charge of the Royal North Dragoons, The Scots Greys at the Battle of Waterloo. According to an eyewitness Alexander Armour at the start of the charge of the greys had to pass through the ranks of the Highland Brigade and armour recalled The highlanders were then ordered to wheel back, when they did so we rushed through them at the same time they heard us calling Now my boys Scotland Forever.

Commandos of 1st Special Service Brigade, led by Lord Lovat, are piped past the defenders of the Caen canal (Pegasus) bridge by piper Bill Millin. The bridge was originally taken in a coup de main attack by the gliders of 6th Airborne Divisions D Company, 2nd battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, led by Major John Howard earlier that morning. Shortly afterwards the glider troops were reinforced by 7 Parachute Battalion, and together they held the area against German attacks until the main British forces landing at Sword beach could fight through to join them.

The battle took place on the 17th November 1796, Arcole is a small village in Italy on the Alpine river. Bonaparte, holding the tri colour, urges on his Grenadiers and carries the Bridge of Arcole, thus bringing victory over the Austrians. This episode has passed into French Army Legend but we understand the truth to be. A French Officer cried if you fall we are lost, you shall not go further. This is not your place and Bonaparte almost drowned when the officer pushed him into the water.
Le Bataille Du Pont D Arcole by Horace Vernet.

During the Second World War, a division of troops was specially trained in Commando methods to infiltrate behind the Japanese lines in Burma. They became known as Chindits, the name given to them by their leader, Major-General Orde Wingate. In March 1944, a plan was formed to land them by air in the jungle. Two landing sites were identified, but immediately before take-off one was reported to be obstructed by logs, and therefore the expedition landed at the site code-named Broadway. 26 C47 Dakota transport aircraft of the US 1st Air Commando took off in the evening, each one towing two Waco gliders. 37 of these arrived at Broadway. 30 men were killed and 33 injured as the gliders bumped and swerved in the jungle clearing that first night. Almost all the gliders were damaged or destroyed as they hit obstacles or crashed into each other in the darkness. Men were running all over the field, shouting instructions and trying to clear the runway of wreckage. Often, those trying to help wounded men off the field would have to duck out of the path of a landing glider. The Chindits disembarked from the side doors of the gliders, ready for action, and fanned out to form a perimeter at the edge of the jungle all round the landing site. Four bulldozers were also landed, and their task was to improve the landing site for the C47 transports to follow. Colonel WP Scott, commanding the 1st Battalion of The King's Regiment (Liverpool), was in the first glider. His task was to rake the surrounding jungle with his Tommy gun and if he received answering fire, he was to fire a red Verey flare to warn the rest not to land on Target 1. Eight hours before take-off he said, +I've got that flare so deep in my pocket that I doubt if anyone else can find it if I'm killed.+ There being no Target 2, or no way of getting back from Target 1, he chose that casual way of announcing that the Chindits would fight for the airstrip site even if they found a Japanese Division sitting on it when the gliders started to come down. The Broadway landing paved the way for the retaking of Burma.
