Brian Wood

He was born in London 19th August 1948, grew up in Tolworth, Surrey, eventually emigrating to Australia with his family. He left school aged 16 and served an apprenticeship in the printing industry as a machine minder. In that vocation he was a lost cause. He was aware of an ability to draw from an early age but only became interested in painting whilst recovering from a broken leg at the age of 20, never regarding it as any more than a hobby. On completion of his apprenticeship he joined the Australian Army, serving in Vietnam as an infantryman come photographer, working in less than ideal conditions. His duties called for him to photographically record his battalions tour for intelligence purposes as well as posterity. He was also prevailed upon to sketch for newsletters etc. After his discharge in 1972, he decided to travel on a working holiday which included working on an oil rig in the North Sea before travelling extensively in Europe, South America and Africa. He settled in South Africa for a period of time working in various jobs and experimenting more seriously with art. He returned to Australia where he accepted a position with the Port of Melbourne Authoritys Emergency Service, performing a number of duties but chiefly concerned with construction and salvage diving. During this period his recreation was his painting and he is completely self taught. Entries into specific exhibitions led to modest recognition by acceptance into the Australian Guild of Realist Artists and the securing of several private commissions. His interest in historical subjects, mainly maritime, has been with him since childhood. Due to developments beyond his control, his employment with the Port Authority ceased in mid 1991 and he embarked on painting full time. This resulted in his winning a First Prize Award in Sydneys Royal Easter Show for 1993 with Culloden - The Aftermath, which is now hanging in Aros - Isle of Skye Heritage Centre in Scotland. He now lives on the shores of Moreton Bay, Queensland and outside of his occupation of painting, sailing is his main recreation - a natural extension of his interesr in the sea.

 At Dawn on 9th March 1862, as the American Civil War raged on, an extraordinary combat took place in Hampton Roads, a naval exchange that was to herald a new age and completely change the concept and design of modern warships.  Having already destroyed the two Federal warships <i>Cumberland</i> and <i>Congress</i> the previous day, the Confederate ironclad <i>CSS Virginia</i> readied herself for another day's work, her target this time being the grounded <i>Minnesota</i>.  As the <i>Virginia</i> approached her target, she was confronted by the much smaller Union ironclad <i>Monitor</i> which had just arrived after a fraught journey from New York.  Thus began an exchange of fire that lasted more than three hours, each ship's shot merely bouncing and deflecting off its opponent without inflicting any serious damage.  With her smokestack shot away, the <i>Virginia</i> now concentrated her shot on the <i>Monitor'</i>s tiny wheelhouse where a direct hit blinded the Union ship's commander, necessitating a temporary withdrawal.  By the time <i>Monitor</i> was ready to re-engage, the <i>Virginia</i> was limping away, the result of this fierce encounter being nothing more than stalemate.  Neither ship could claim any form of victory and neither had sustained any meaningful damage.  Though clumsy and difficult to handle, the thick iron plating and low profiles of these very different vessels signaled a direction in warship design that lasted until the Second World War, eighty years later.

The Atlantic ocean was the lifeline between Britain and America, as well as millions of tons of raw materials, GIs were also transported over in all manor of hastily converted liners.  Protecting the troops from marauding u-boats and German surface ships was of paramount importance to the allied fleets.  Although USS New York spent a good deal of the war in the Atlantic, she also participated in the Torch landings off North Africa and took part in the Pacific campaign, seeing action at both Iwo Jima and Okinowa.

 Surely one of the most beautiful of the clipper ships, Cutty Sark is seen driving through a moderate swell en route to the UK with another valuable cargo.  She was designed by the great Hercules Linton and her beautiful hull built by Scott & Linton's Dumbarton shipyards but, when that company went bankrupt, the nearby firm of Denby Brothers took over to complete the build.  Today she is a magnificent sight, beautifully preserved and on display at Greenwich in London.
