Mark Churms

Mark was born in Wales in 1967. He gained his degree in Architectural Studies at Oxford Polytechnic in 1989, but soon his interest in drawing buildings was surpassed by his love of painting horses and in 1991 he began work as a freelance artist. His first commissions were for sporting subjects, Polo, Racing and Hunting. However his consuming passion for military history, particularly of the Napoleonic era, quickly became his dominant theme, with the invaluable counsel of French military experts (accuracy in uniform and terrain of the various battles takes a great deal of time and consultation with many experts across Europe). Mark Churms joined Cranston Fine Arts in 1991 and for a period of 8 years, was commissioned for several series and special commissions. His series of the Zulu War, and of the Battle of Waterloo were the highlights during this period. Mark Churms' deep understanding and detailed knowledge of the period made Mark at that time one of the most prolific and successfull artists for Cranston Fine Arts. Cranston Fine Arts are proud with their series of superb art prints and original paintings painted by Mark Churms in this period.  In the year 1070, Saxon England lay under Norman oppression. Only one last centre of resistance remained. The Isle of Ely in the Fenlands of East Anglia. Here, Hereward Leofricson, son of Earl Leofric and Lady Godiva, emerged as a warrior leader. Struggling against overwhelming odds in his defiance of the Normans. The legend of Hereward the Wake was born.

King Arthur received his wounds at the Battle of Camlann where he killed the dark knight Sir Mordred. Sir Bedevere (the Last of the Knights of the round table) with the dying King Arthur and from the haze a great black swan-like barge appears. On the barge are nine noble ladies, one of which is Queen Morgan Le Fay, and another being the lady of the Lake. They have come to take King Arthur to the isle of Avalon.

Battle of Louisburg during the French and Indian Wars,  A British Force set out to capture the French Fortress of Louisburg at Cape Breton island. A Army of New Englanders under the command of Col. William Pepperell supported by an English Fleet under Commander  Peter Warren.  Attacked the Fortress of Louisburg on April 30th 1745 and finally captured the fortress on June 17th.  A great British Victory which endangered  the French position in North America.   The fortifications were handed back to France in 1748 in the treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle.

 Shura is an Arabic word meaning 'consultation'.  It is mentioned three times in the Quran as a praiseworthy activity.  ISAF forces sit down to discuss local events and to exchange views over a pot of sweet tea.  Sitting cross-legged, the ISAF are allowed to wear their boots and the locals fully understand that Europeans cannot sit cross-legged for even a short time.
