Battle of Aliwal
Battle of Aliwal 28th January 1846.

The third battle of the First Sikh War. The British and Indian Force continued to push the Sikh army back to the Sutlej River. In East Punjab at Aliwal, Sir Harry Smith with a force of 10,000 men attacked a Sikh army of nearly 20,000 strong on January 28th. The Sikh force were difficult to push back and it was not until the third cavalry charge that the Sikhs were finally routed, losing many men while crossing the river Sutlej. This just left one more battle to be fought 45 miles away at Sobraon.
